Suggestions on a tripod

I have recently been looking at getting a better tripod and a ball head. Don't have a lot of money in the budget but need something better than what I have now which is not serving me well. It's not sturdy and doesn't support my long zoom.I need something that can hold my D80 and zoom lens and be light enough for hiking and carrying around for taking landscapes. Would appreciate all suggestions and your experience. Thanks

Re: Suggestions on a tripod

It's way too easy to spend tons of money on a tripod and ballhead, but unless you do a lot of studio or landscape work it can be hard to justify the expense.

Here's a good starter system that won't cost an arm and a leg, but comes close to the quality of much more costly setups:

Tripod: Hakuba HG-503MX or -504MX (Carbon fiber - nearly equal to a Gitzo in quality, but only costs around $290.) Includes a 3-way pan head that can be swapped out with the ballhead below and is very light (4 lbs).

Ballhead: Bogen/Manfrotto 490RC4 (Includes built-in bubble level, quick release plate, and friction control. About $200)

As a bonus, because the Hakuba includes a pan and tilt head, it's a complete solution until you can afford the ballhead.

Re: Suggestions on a tripod

Both sound like perfect choices for me and just what I am looking for. I'll be looking into both of these recommendations Thank you for your reply!!
